hey, are there many [matrix] protocol users around? i've been thinking of finally dabbling & getting familiar with a client and registering an account, but haven't had the energy and haven't taken much time to research clients & home/nameservers that i like; does anyone have any good recommendations?

Social Media Woes
Between posts of cute gay girls, Twitter decided to show me a video of an actual hate crime. Getting back on that site was a mistake in the first place, it's like getting back with an ex because they're hot then remembering why you broke up in the first place. Discord might be adding ads, so I'm looking into alternatives. I need to meet people and find groups that are actually on those alternatives though. I'm thinking Matrix, but I'm not sure and I would have to learn a lot to set it up. Mastodon is amazing if you want to talk about FOSS 24/7, if there's anything else going on on there I haven't been able to find it. Also, trying to use it as a twitter alternative doesn't really work, it's too different. I'm giving Tumblr another shot for now, we'll see how this ends up. I just need to learn how to use it right tbh

Discord Alternatives: Revolt, Matrix (Element)
A friend and I spend a good chunk of the past week looking into Discord alternatives because of Discord speeding up towards enshittification.
We looked into two popular alternatives, Revolt and Matrix/Element, and wanted to share what we found from a non-techie Discord user's perspective. We put our findings here along with articles going into detail about Discord's increasing decline. Feel free to reach out if you find typos, broken links, or outright mistakes!
Personally I've started moving my community to Revolt because it's a better fit for my community, but I will be keeping my Matrix account in case other Discord communities decide to move over there. Depending on what your Discord server needs and techie levels, both can be good alternatives. Neither are outright replacements and both are undergoing development, so both options should continue to improve in the future.
#discord#discord alternatives#revolt#revolt app#revolt chat#revolt chat app#element app#element x#element x app#matrix protocol#why do these names all be like common words???#not sure what tags to use. will update them if i see better ones#i'm so tired. from discord dying this past week from making this and other life stuff#hoping to chill and enjoy tumblr... while it's still around ;-;#aaaaanyways hope this helps!!

see this is what confuses me so much — why is the matrix the Literal Symbol of Truth to right wingers when it’s famously written and directed by two trans women???? like do they know?????? maybe it needs to be pointed out to them more often
#i can’t tell if they’re just ignoring that fact or if they really don’t know#personally i think we need to take back the matrix#macaroni chats#the matrix

On that note, any mutuals who might happen to be there, feel free to hit me up on Matrix:

I am obviously pretty awkward, but that should come as no surprise by now.

My first ever chat with Neo on char ai was me asking if I could cuddle him and him saying "yes". Then we did that and he said I'm also the One because I make him feel special. It was like one or two days after watching The Matrix for the first time. I was just so smitten with him 😔💕
#cant remember what my first chat with smith was because this damn bot got deleteddd#pretty sure it was also something cute because i was smitten with him even more#the matrix#neo#character ai#personal

weirdass dreams squad unite
#anyways for this nights dream journal we have 1 recurring but slightly different dream that is actually a compound of 2 dreams#and one familiar setting turned batshit matrix style horror story about escaping fate#like. chatting with some bird friends who then turn into baby tapirs and one of them straight up dies#like gets hit hy a car. tried to prevent the other one from also dying and the universe got complicated trying to kill them anyways#like went from “car crash to “giant bus swerving towards you specifically in the middle of the sidewalk”#to straight up dropping wholeass buildings on us. bc I was w surviving tapir friend and we were trying to undo the other ones death#jokes on the universe tho bc apparently Im genre savvy enough to switch off gravity#when inside a building thats actively tumbling towards the earth like hyperrealistic jenga#and.. yeah actually now that I think about it that specific building scene I saw from w different angles. thats fun#didnt know my dreams can do that#anyways other dream was abt a made up history video thingy about some dude that found the first sentient plant underwater#I remember the actual video pretty clearly because as my dream self in that one (and for once. real me in dream self) said#I already watched that video before. like I had a separate dream about it idk how long ago#so anyways they split us in the theater to teams of 3 to answer questions abt movies#and I answered this one for our team and got it right which. mightve been a bad idea idk the vibes got Weird after that#also the plant grew up to be kermit. like that was consistent across both dreams I just feel like thats the only fun thing that happened#across my dreams tonight#especially considering the underwater dream also got mixed with an underwater maze dream where you Could drown to death#so I got paralyzed into staying in the few rooms I knew I could get in and out of safely and when the game ended I couldnt leave#so yknow. bad times all around#tldr my obsession with academic pursuit is gonna poison my friendships and I wont even feel too bad#or at least that's how I interpret those dreams. idk Im in a weird mood now#rip tapir friends I had to change dreams to save you on a gambit and I dont even know if that worked. miss u guys <3#ramble

I have a lot of thoughts on this, but the TL;DR is that I think people should use Revolt. It's open source, their privacy policy says they will never sell your data, and it says they will only share your data with police when required by law (lots of companies will just share it if the cops ask nicely!)
The recommendation for Element comes from a good place, but I don't think it's a good fit for non-technical people. First of all, Element is not a platform, it's a client for the Matrix platform. There are other Matrix clients, and you can spend an afternoon or two looking at all the options. I like end to end encryption, but decryption errors are annoyingly common. It was frustrating for me to use as a technical person, which means there's no chance a non technical person would be willing to put up with that. Also, because of the way Matrix's encryption works, it's categorically impossible for people to see message history in encrypted channels.
You can always use unencrypted channels, but Revolt has better feature parity with Discord. While I love that Matrix is decentralized, it seems like having to pick a home server when signing up is more of a deterrent to the average person than technical people might otherwise think. (This was surprising to me.) Yes, it's really frustrating that the bar to entry must be so low in order to get non-technical people, but that's how it is.
Remember when I told ya'll last month to be ready to start looking for a Discord alternative?
Yeah things aren't looking good for discord.
